Solving wicked problems of the future – online summer course

Do you want to learn more about marine ecology, governance and maritime business?

The Sea—Solving wicked problems of the future ocean course aims to introduce the students to some of the current ocean-related wicked problems and to discuss solutions that enable coexistence between marine and maritime life and the modern society that promotes sustainability.

A ‘wicked problem’ is a challenging and urgent problem with numerous causes and effects, for instance climate change, or eutrophication of water bodies. Their solution involves a number of different stakeholders with divergent views, which makes these problems inherently difficult to solve.

The course is organized by Åbo Akademi University between 9-20 August. Read more about the course and sign up by 12 April https://turkusummerschool.turkuamk.fi/courses-2021/solving-wicked-problems-of-the-future-ocean/

Universidad de Salerno

Sustainable Construction: from re-use to new use (SustaCon21).

The school is organized by the Department of Civil Engineering (DICIV) and the Department of Information and Electric Engineering and Applied Mathematics (DIEM) of the University of Salerno (UNISA), in cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvia, and it will take place from August 26 to September 3, 2021, in Salerno, Italy.

At the moment we are planning to hold the school both in presence and online, to do not prevent participation to people that will not be allowed to travel in August. We believe that the vaccination campaign and seasonal pattern of the virus will allow to have the situation under control and will permit to celebrate the school in presence. Anyway, health is the first issue and we understand that complications may occur. For this reason, we will accept also applications for virtual participation.

Of course, for those that will attend the school in presence, all the sanitary rules will be fulfilled, ensuring social distancing, masks and frequent sanitizing of hands and rooms.

Anyway, if in summertime the restrictions for travelling and for celebrating events will be in force, we will move the school fully in online mode. The final decision will be provided in timely manner. Our staff will give support to candidates and professors to handle travel and accommodation reservations.

In the first issue of the SustaCon newsletter, available at the following link:

https://www.flipsnack.com/ClaudioGuarnaccia/sustacon-newsletter-issue-n-1-2021.html

You may find a short resume of 2020 edition of SustaCon symposium, as well as other news and info about sustainable construction topics.

Differently to previous editions of SustaCon, this year a one day international research workshop will be organized at the end of the school, to host latest research results from the professors teaching in the school and from other international experts. Students registered to the school will have free entrance in the workshop.

Applications for SustaCon are expected before June 30, 2021 (no payment required at this step).

Further information can be found here:

https://www.diciv.unisa.it/en/teaching/focus?id=301

We look forward to meeting students in Salerno, sure that their attendance will be valuable for the success of the school.

University of Warwick

We have taken the decision to relocate our Warwick Summer School back to our main University of Warwick campus rather than run the programme from Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham as originally planned. Hosting our Summer School at our own beautiful home campus means we have more control over all the elements of the programme including the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff.

What does this mean for students?

They will live and study at our amazing Warwick campus

Our Summer School will continue to be the same great mix of quality academic teaching from top Warwick faculty in a range of courses to suit all levels (and still able to gain academic credit), a fun and engaging social and cultural programme, top guest speakers and an internationally diverse experience. The difference will be that students will live and study on our large world-class campus with outstanding teaching and learning spaces, a 24-hour library, Arts centre and cinema, brand new sports and wellness hub, restaurants and cafes and many green spaces including lakes, woodland and open fields. Find out more here.

Students will be staying in the Heart of England

Our campus is in the Heart of England, close to the city of Coventry and England’s second city of Birmingham and just an hour’s  train journey away from London. We are perfectly placed for exploring Shakespeare’s birthplace – Stratford upon Avon, Warwick Castle, the spa town of Leamington Spa and the Cotswolds, home to some of the most picturesque villages and countryside in the UK. Find out more here.

Students will still visit London

We understand that some students might be disappointed not to be staying a little closer to London BUT we are still only one hour away by train AND we will now be including a complimentary overnight stay to London as part of the fee. We’ll provide coach travel, overnight accommodation in en-suite accommodation in central London and tickets for students to experience the London Eye, a hop-on-hop-off bus tour and one other major attraction.

We’ll also be including an additional 1920s themed dinner, casino and disco night at Coombe Abbey. Our trips to Oxford and Harry Potter Studios will also still take place. Find out more about the social and cultural programme here.

Students will live on the Warwick campus

All of our halls of residence are on campus meaning students only need to roll out of bed just before lectures and everything is walking distance. Our accommodation and catering packages offer great value for money and give you the flexibility to choose a package which suits all budgets. Find out more here.

Update

Despite the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, we have continued to plan ahead for our Warwick Summer Schools in the hope that by the summer, the UK and the world would be in a very different place.

Unfortunately, this is not the case and so the decision has been made to cancel both the Warwick Summer School and Pre-University Summer School for 2021.

We are really disappointed and saddened by this, but we feel that this is the best decision we could make in the circumstances; the safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority.

While we are confident we could run the teaching aspects of the programmes in a safe and meaningful way, there would still be many restrictions in place and we are not convinced we could deliver a good student experience overall. As you know, our programme is as much about the international student experience as well as the academic content. We pride ourselves on our ability to deliver well-rounded Summer Schools, but sadly we are unable to promise this with any conviction in the current circumstances. It is also unclear at this point whether travel restrictions to the UK will be lifted and what quarantine arrangements would have to be in place, meaning students will be unable to make their travel and visa arrangements in a timely manner.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to take the time to plan for 2022 to ensure we have a really strong offer and come back bigger and better than before! We will be in contact with you when we are launching the Summer Schools 2022, and we hope to continue to work with you all successfully and meet your students again next summer.

We are also launching the opportunity for institutions to work with us on bespoke short programmes; we are able to match requirements and budgets with our expertise through our end-to-end service. You can find out more on our website and we’ll also be in touch soon to tell you more and discuss how we can work together to develop these programmes.

In the meantime, on behalf of the Warwick Summer Schools team, we would like to thank you for all your help promoting and supporting the programmes so far.

If you have any queries, please do drop us an email via wss@warwick.ac.uk.

UCL Summer School

UCL Summer School

UCL Summer School activity on campus should be cancelled this year; all teaching, learning and administration will now take place online. This is in response to the continued uncertainty around Covid-19 and concerns for the safety of both staff and students.

This is of course a great shame and we all look forward to the day we can return to campus but, until then, the safety of staff and students has to be the priority. It would be much appreciated if you could spread the word amongst any students who may be interested in joining our programme this summer.
